Chavannes, Pierre Puvis de Biography

French painter, born in Lyons. In Paris he studied briefly with the painters Eugene Delacroix and Thomas Couture. In 1861 he exhibited War and Peace, two murals (Musee de Picardie, Amiens) that established his reputation as an artist. During the greater part of his career, he was occupied with important mural paintings for French public buildings. Puvis de Chavannes's easel paintings include The Sacred Grove (1887, Art Institute of Chicago) and The Inspiring Muses Acclaiming Genius as Messenger of Light (1894-98, Boston Public Library). Despite the growing emphasis on realism during his time, he favored allegorical themes, neoclassical style, and a subdued palette.
