Henri, Robert Biography

American painter, art educator, and mentor of the group of painters known as The Eight. Robert Henri was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and educated at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Academie Julian and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1891 he began to paint and teach in Philadelphia, where he met the painters John Sloan and William Glackens and inspired them to paint American life with vigorous, dramatic realism. They moved to New York City, where, with Robert Henri as their guiding spirit, they joined other painters to form The Eight, or the so-called Ashcan school. The Eight broke with academic tradition, especially in their portrayals of the crude vigor of city life, and were active in the 1913 Armory Show, which introduced modern European art to America.
