Higgins, Victor Biography

Victor Higgins was raised in a farming community in Indiana and he studied in Chicago and for four years in Europe. Returning to the United States, Higgins taught at the Fine Arts Academy in Chicago. Victor Higgins arrived in Taos in 1913 and the following year became a permanent resident.

Higgins' early style was impressionistic and betrays a static academic attitude governed by a quiet palette. When he began to aggressively pursue other trends, a concern for symmetry appeared in his paintings, rendered in brilliant hues. Higgins shows an artistic development of complexity and creative growth. Sensitive to the evolution of contemporary art, he incorporated these elements into his oil paintings by exploring the geometric interrelationships of cubist design and the study of form.
