Obin, Philome Biography

Philome Obin, one of Haiti's most important and influential painters, is recognized as the founder of the northern school of painting, the centre of which was Cap-Haitien near to where he was born.Philome Obin supported himself by working as a barber, bookkeeper and clerk while painting. He was encouraged by De Witt Peters and with Rigaud Benoit and Casera Bazile, was commissioned to paint the first murals at the Ste. Trinitee Cathedral in Port-au-Prince. His artwork incorporated both genre and historical subject matter in highly stylized, organized and detailed presentation.
