Rockwell, Norman Biography

American painter and illustrator, best known for his magazine covers and illustrations for such prominent American periodicals as the Saturday Evening Post, the Ladies' Home Journal, and Look. Norman Rockwell was born in New York City, and he trained there at the Art Students League.

Norman Rockwell was a careful craftsman with an ability to represent detail realistically. The subjects of most of his illustrations are taken from everyday family and small-town life and are often treated with a touch of humour. Though loved by the public, Norman Rockwell's work was dismissed by most critics as lacking artistic merit and authentic social observation. In 1977 he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest peacetime award, by Pres. Gerald R. Ford.
