Sheeler, Charles

1883-1965
Sheeler, Charles Biography

American painter who is best known for his precise renderings of industrial forms in which abstract, formal qualities were emphasized.

Charles Sheeler was born in Philadelphia and educated at the School of Industrial Art there and at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. During visits to Europe, he was profoundly influenced by the highly structured work of Paul Cezanne and the cubists..

Charles Sheeler's early artworks, such as Upper Deck (1929, Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge, Massachusetts), are realistically detailed and subdued in color. In later works (the 1940s and '50s), such as Ballardville (1946, Addison Gallery, Andover, New Hampshire), shapes are simplified and colors brilliant.
