Sloan, John Biography

American painter and etcher, renowned for his portrayals of everyday life in New York City. John Sloan was born in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia where he studied with Robert Henri.

John Sloan was part of a short-lived group of American artists known as The Eight, some of whose members, including Sloan, were later referred to as Ashcan painters because of their ruthlessly realistic depictions of city life. John Sloan's oil paintings in the style of the Ashcan school are especially noted for their vivid human characterizations. He also executed scenes of Native American life in New Mexico, as well as numerous portraits and nudes.
