Soulages, Pierre Biography French painter who, after war service, turned from farming to painting, was more or less self-taught and had a quick success as a leading abstract artist. Pierre Soulages earned this with dramatic oil paintings in which broad beams of paint lie over light grounds, black over white, but then also browns and hints of blue, but always- back-lit, with the beams done as though imposed in one stroke.
