Lindner, Richard Biography

German-American artist who left Germany for Paris in 1933, emigrated to the USA in 1941 and became an American citizen in 1948. Richard Lindner had worked in advertising in Germany and in the USA he did illustrations for Vogue and other leading magazines. From 1950 on Lindner gave priority to oil painting and in 1952 gave up his illustration work. The oil paintings normally show figures whose fleshy abundance contrasts with their attributes, painted firmly and without grace to create icons rich in cultural references yet destabilized by stylistic conflicts and fragmentations within the image. Richard Lindner exhibited frequently from 1954 on; in the 1960s his art work was seen internationally.
