Tsuchiya, Tilsa Biography

Tilsa Tsuchiya Castillos was born to a Japanese father and Peruvian mother in Lima. She learned to draw when she was eight and saw it as a way to portray beauty. She studied at the School of Fine Artin Lima from 1954 to 1959 where she was influenced by the popular themes of social realism, indigenous subject matter and abstraction. Tilsa Tsuchiya personalized these themes in her work by fusing them with a Japanese influence and Quechan mythology. She traveled to Europe and studied at the Ecole des Beaux Artes and the Sorbonne. She was internationally recognized as part of the small group of Surrealist Peruvian artists that emerged during the 1970s.
