Twentieth century Canadian art is dominated by the internationally renowned Group of Seven artists whose numbers eventually numbered ten excluding Tom Thompson who died before the group was formed. The ten Canadian modern artists were: Lauren Harris, J.E.H. MacDonald, Arthur Lismer, F.H. Varley. Frank Carmichael, Frank Johnston, A.J. Casson. Edwin Holgate, and Lemoine Fitzgerald. All of them painted in a similar vibrantly colorful, expressionist style and collectively reflect the diversity of Canada itself, from wild rivers to domestic fields, from autumn landscapes to the stark landscapes of the artic.
